Chapter 35
Croeso-i-Cymru. Welcome to Wales. The rain was barely a mist by the time they entered Wales on Route 5 east of Llangollen. Nick had almost forgotten the gentle rise of the hills and the way the mist veiled the land, muting its colors.
âEver been to the States?â
Nick glanced at Olivia and saw that she had sliced off a chunk of the cheddar Leslie had sent with them. She handed it to him. âOnce. About eight or nine years ago. I met a woman from Minneapolis who was at university in London. Went to visit her.â He chuckled. âExcellent time of year to be in MinneapolisâJanuary. Never knew it could get so cold.â
âHer, or the weather?â
âAs it turned out, it was London sheâd been in love with.â He took a bite of cheese. âThose things do have a way of wearing off once you change the setting.â
âSo Iâve heard,â she mused.
The sharp cheese made his jaw ache. He swallowed. âSo, youâve never been rejected by a lover whoâs lost interest?â
âNot because of the setting.â
As they rode through the hills, he began to feel the draw of the land, as though recalling a forgotten but vivid dream.
âYou ought to pay close attention,â he said. âSome say this is Arthurâs country.â
âI thought that was southern England.â
âEveryone lays claim to the man.â
âYou British take your legends seriously, donât you?â
âSome do. Some donât. Some try to make money out of them.â
âWhich group do you fall into?â
âDonât know.â He gave it a few seconds. âNot the latter.â
âI donât see how you could have been around Ben for long without being brainwashed.â
âI was bloody-minded. Determined to be more difficult to win over than my mother.â
âSo, you never bought into it?â
âI learned to respect myth, but didnât share Benâs passion.â
She smiled. âHe always did have trouble finding the line between reality and fiction.â
âSometimes itâs not so obvious.â
Olivia offered Nick another slice of cheese. He shook his head.
âYour father took all this quite seriously,â he said. âI think thatâs why he fancied Britain. We are steeped in legend and myth. Youâre a country with so many diverse groups, and youâre a comparatively young country. Aside from your native Americans, which most of you arenât, you have no single source for your myths and legends. They get watered down. Sometimes you try to rationalize them.â
âWhatâs wrong with that?â
âNothingâs wrong with it. Not really.â He continued, a little surprised by his own thoughts, âBen never tried to explain the myths away. He believed there were certain aspects to life that were best experienced rather than examined. He was that way with some people,â Nick said, thinking of his mother, âand with legend.â
âBen was naïve.â
âI wouldnât call it that. Idealistic, perhaps, but not naïve.â He paused. âMakes for damned interesting entertainment.â
âGive me a break. Itâs all kidâs stuff. Fairytales.â
âKidâs stuff, you say? Hardly. Well, perhaps the watered-down versions are fairly tame, but the more, shall we say, sophisticated, versions rival soap operas.â
âI donât watch soap operas.â
âI know. You prefer to live them.
